Week 1 - Learning to be nice to others

Since it was my sons idea for the first theme. He came up with learning to be nice. Works for me. I figured I would add a little to it with character building. Did you know that teachers are required to teach at least 5 minutes a day of character building. I think that's great! Here are some of the ideas I have planned for the week. Should be fun!

Events & Activities:

Going to a mall events. Since it was already planned. I will have him practice manners. Like opening doors for others. Saying please and thank you. Going out of his way to do nice things for others.

Bake cookies for two of our neighbors. One I mentioned in the hug post had just lost her husband. The other is an older couple that is always so nice to us.

Visit an animal shelter nearby and donate treats and cat food. Try to walk a couple dogs if possible. I called but never heard back on that. So, we will see if that is a possibility.

Donate toys to kids/shelter. Might be at the end of the week. Since I need to locate a shelter. But, I'm going to have my oldest go through his toys and find ones to give to kids that might not have toys. Maybe a women's shelter.

Email family. Have my son tell me what to type in a letter to family and pictures included. I'm sure he will love to hear the responses back. Maybe we will actually write a letter. I'm so used to instant gratification ;)

Visit a nursing home. I used to volunteer at a nursing home in high school. Before college. It really was a great experience. I remember coming back during a college break. I used to sit and paint this ladies nails and she would tell me stories about her life. Well, I hadn't been there in about 6 months and she thought I went off and got married. I'm sure they would love the company from the children. Although, I'm not sure it will happen this week. Since we would probably need to fill out paperwork etc.

Visit with the Grandparents and Great Grandparents. Maybe make them a present before leaving.

Create a kindness chart or bucket. Then we can write down all of his random acts of kindness and fill it up. Nice way for him to see what he has done.

Plant seeds of kindness. Another idea to use instead of a chart. This goes along with the book The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle. Basically, to show my son how each act of kindness grows.

Reading: I found some great books for the kids. All are great character builders. They are all on hold at the library.

PreSchool-Grade 2 Using the activity of making and eating cookies, the author defines some important concepts for young children, such as respect, trustworthiness, patience, politeness, loyalty, etc. The book begins: COOPERATE means, How about you add the chips while I stir? and continues with one definition per page. For example, FAIR means, You get a bite, I get a bite….; REGRET means, I really wish I didn't eat so many cookies; and CONTENT means sitting on the steps just you, me, and a couple of cookies. Lovely pastel watercolor illustrations show appealing children and anthropomorphic animals interacting with one another and the treats. Although books dealing with this type of subject tend to be didactic and preachy, the utilization of the cookies to explain the concepts is a brilliant idea and works well on a child's level. The text is short and clear, and the book is delightful to look at and browse through. This is a good choice for one-on-one reading or to start an interesting class discussion.

The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle

This picture book admirably conveys the miracle of a seed. Chalkboard Glass Jars Teacher Gifts... Tutorial Too

Chalkboard Glass Jars (Tutorial below)

My son finished his last day yesterday! I had been thinking about this idea for quite awhile. I had the jars and the chalkboard spray paint. I just wasn't sure what I was going to do with them. I did some research online and couldn't find anything like what was in my mind. Since his teacher and assistant teacher couldn't get their present in the Summer I just did it ;) Here is what I came up with. I figured they could use them to put their pens and pencils in or stuff for the classroom. I had my son write thank you on the jars after I was done. But, explained they could erase and write what they wanted. They really liked them!! Plus it's a "Green" present since we recycled!

You will need:

2 Empty clean glass jars (mine were Ragu)
Chalkboard Spray Paint (I used Valspar)
Painters tape or masking tape
Newspaper or something to cover
Ribbons
Hot Glue Gun & Glue Sticks (a heavy duty glue would probably work)
Chalk to prep the surface

1. Clean the glass jars so there is a clean surface. I used peanut butter to get rid of the sticker goo. It worked! Just put a little bit on the sticky areas, let it sit for a couple minutes and rub or scrape off. Worked like a charm. Clean that after. I put them in the dishwasher.

2. Tape off the top and bottom where the round part starts. I used a newspaper on the top in a cone shape. I didn't have a purpose for it before. But, then I realized when spray painting that it came in handy for turning while spray painting.

3. Spray paint the jars. I held mine in the air by the paper cone...lol. Gave me better leverage and I could see if I was missing spots. I did 4 coats. Letting them dry in between each coat. It says it's ready to go after an hour. But, I say overnight before using the chalkboard.

4. I grab some cute coordinating ribbon I had in my stash. I have a little ribbon addiction. So, that took awhile choosing the right colors with his teachers likes in mind. Heat up the glue gun. I always burn my fingers using that thing! I applied the top ribbon first. Applying the glue in the threads of the jar then sticking the ribbon on flat. I folded the end for a finished look. Then I applied the ric rac on the chalkboard edges for a finished look.

5. I prepped the surface in the morning. Taking chalk and rubbing it all over the chalkboard paint. Then wiped it off. So, it was ready to go. That was actually hard for me. Since I like a clean look...lol. Then I had my son write thank you on each one. I thought they turned out pretty cute!

Power of a Simple Hug

Our block is pretty quiet and to themselves. Weird compared to the blocks I lived on growing up. But, I always try to talk to the people that live on our street. Well, the newest couple was older...maybe in their 80's. I always said hi and talked if I had a minute. Well, I asked how she was and she said not good. I asked why and she said her husband had a stroke and passed away two weeks ago. I felt so bad. I can't imagine being alone after being with someone for so long. I don't know her that well. But, I gave her a hug and told her I would pray for her and to ask if she needed anything.

On our Learning to be Nice week we plan to make something for her. Little Man's idea. Not sure if you guys remember that "Free Hugs Campaign" You Tube video awhile back about hugging. I cried when I watched it the first time (add every time after...lol). But, I remembered that video and gave her a hug. Weird how a hug can mean so much. I know that sounds goofy. But, in my head I was thinking will she think it's weird and instead I just did it. She even asked my son for a hug after and the little goober chickened out and took off running. I'm going to try to hug more often :) Now to just work on little man's hugging etiquette :). He of course didn't hear the conversation about her losing her husband. I explained that later and told him it was okay to hug her if she asked.

My family actually wasn't very huggy growing up. Then I moved away to college near my dad and my step family is very huggy. I actually learned to give a real hug from them. You know the ones that make you feel good. Well, I brought that back home with me on my first break from college. I'm glad I did because my Grandma passed my Junior year in college and I can't imagine not getting lots of hugs from her before she passed away. Now my family hugs without me there. Which makes me happy.

Hosting Summer Camp at Home...

So, I have been rolling this idea around in my head for a couple weeks now. This will be my oldest sons first "real" summer vacation. I'm not big on running around between drop off and pick up for Summer Camps. Plus my favorite part of Summer Vacation is having my little man home with us. So, I wanted to make it fun and eventful without too much "Mom, I'm bored!"

We're going to have themed weeks and activities, books, movies, cooking, places to go that will teach us something about the theme. I asked little man what he wanted to learn. He came back and said he wanted to learn how to be nice to people . Bonus points for that answer. So, that week will be Learning to be Nice week. Can't believe he chose that. I must have done a good job so far ;)

Happy Birthday to Joe...

So, Saturday was Joe's birthday. I had been wanting to surprise him with a "big" gift for once. Since I am a SAHM it's not as easy to surprise him for birthday's. Since he can see the bank statement ;) So, I hunted for something he would like and we could use to spend quality family time together. So, I got him this little number from Sears.

It's a Kenmore 596 sq. in 3 Burner Gas Grill with Side Burner. I had eyed his present for over a month. I just couldn't buy it till his birthday. Since I had no where to hide it or I would be tempted to give it to him early. I had his parents pick it up on their way to his birthday party. He was nicely surprised. I baked him a cake and we ordered pizza at his request. I even insisted on singing happy birthday with the candle lit. He's not big on spotlights on him. But, I think I made his day special and it was nice having his parents over. Can't wait to use it. Have to get the propane tank filled. Weird they don't include the tank with the grill. I couldn't find my camera in time to take pictures either. But, it was a great day.

We had such a nice time with his parents over that I am having them over for Sunday Dinner. Which will be my first time cooking for them in the 7 years Joe and I have been together! Not stressed about it though. I'm making my yummy Roast Chicken, Mashed Potatoes, Salad, Corn, and Rolls. You would think we would grill out...lol. But, I want it to be a special family meal. Sit down style.

Walking Down Memory Lane...My Boys

I stayed up late last night watching old home movies of my boys. I found myself tearing up. Crazy how fast they grow up. Watching their little personalities grow and develop with them. I'm so glad I have the video function on my camera! I can't imagine not being able to see how they once were. Funny. My boys are like little clones. They make similar sounds (my oldest when he was a baby) and look very similar. The little curls on the back of their hair flip the same way.

Here is a picture of my oldest. He's my perfectionist in training. More mellow, loves to talk, do craft projects, relax, articulate, and is always content.

Here is my youngest. He's going to be the life of the party. He is a little comedian, likes things his way (hoping that's just the age...lol), explorer, snuggler, and basically a little firecracker.

They are my little Yin & Yang ;)

3 Day City Wide Garage Sale

I was gone all weekend at garage sales. The city I live in holds an annual garage sale where pretty much every block has at least 2 houses participating. Lots of traffic. But, lots of fun. My poor boys got pulled along on a walking garage sale tour...lol. I figured the traffic is a pain. So, we would just walk. So, I couldn't buy anything big. Since it wouldn't fit in the stroller. Lots of what looks to be junk. But, I have plans of making the the 2 plastic picture frames into chalkboards. One for the kitchen and one for my oldest son. I spent a whopping $.50 each...lol. Gotta love that bird...hehe. I'm trying to decide if I want to keep the clock. Might be kinda neat looking and one of a kind. Hopefully, you'll see there transformation soon.

The Perogie maker from 1984! Looks like it was never used. Only $.75 and I figure one use will make it worth it. It makes other stuff too. I'm thinking of making little pizza rolls. Joe goes through those fast. Basically, you roll out your dough, put it on top of the form, make indentations into the compartments (24 I think), put in your favorite filling, then put on a top layer of dough, use a rolling pin to create the seal and perforate the edges, flip and they all pop out! I guess I like a new tool for the kitchen.

Then my last purchase. The little Rolodex for $1.50. Guess it's not really little. I have to think of another use. My cell is my personal rolodex...minus addresses. But, the size is great and the little compartments can be removed to hold longer items. Maybe for mail on the counter. Do you think spray paint would work on it? Not a fan of oak.

Tackle It Tuesday: Rebates

Rebates!!!

Not such a good deal if you forget to send them out before the deadline. I had been meaning to get these done. So, I added it to my list of things to tackle ;)

Only took a few minutes and I should be receiving some $$$ soon ;) I even had more than pictured and got those in the mail as well. Should be over a $100 when it gets here. Not bad for taking a few minutes to get them in the mail!

Tips on Rebating:
I just started this past summer doing an occasional rebate. I don't go overboard though. But, this is what works for me. I keep the advertisement or rebate entry form in one place. Then I will add the receipts and UPC's needed in the same area. If you do them more often you could keep them in an addressed envelope ready to go. Once you have compiled everything just add a stamp and pop it in the mail.

Last week was a little crazy and I got 3 meals cooked out of 5. I'll do better this week. Won't be as crazy with eating out (I hope...lol). The Spaghetti & Meatball Stew was great and super easy. My 1 yr old ate every last bite and can be pretty picky ;) This week will be full of new recipes! If you would like me to post a recipe let me know! I just didn't have enough time at the moment ;)

Happy Mother's Day Card and Tutorial

Happy Mother's Day!!!

I finally got to play with my paper ;) My boys joined in and made cards for their grandma's. I focused on my mom in Washington. I haven't spent Mother's Day with her since around 2001 :( One of the drawbacks of moving away. But, I try to visit every year. Anyway....back to the card.

Supplies:

White Card stock

2 different sheets or scraps of scrapbook paper

Printed out on white card stock "Happy Mother's Day" I outlined mine in a black square.

Glue Stick or adhesive

Paper trimmer and/or scissors

I made a handmade card out of white card stock. Picked the size I wanted and folded in half. Then I cut two different colors with a 1/4" border surrounding the card.Added what I call a belt ;) One strip of white paper and a skinnier strip of black.

Little man tried to help with his sneaky grin and not going to match tasty yellow marker...lol.

I then glued the saying on and tah-dah. A pretty card on it's way to my mom with a matching key fob I made (see them below). Now, go get some paper and make a nice card for your mom. It's easy and Hallmark can't compare to the TLC from something homemade.

Tackle It Tuesday: Mountain of Coupons

Holy Mountain of Coupons!!!!!!!!

I am a big couponer as you can tell from the pile of just coupons...no ads in there. I wish! I normally only buy 2 Sunday Papers a week. But, Joe's Mom, Grandma, and sometimes sister give me there coupons. So, I get them at random times. Life gets crazy and I put off the new coupons added to the pile. Well, I made it my goal to tackle this pile for Tackle It Tuesday.
Here is how I clip my coupons. I clear the table, then lay out each page and stack the second, third set etc on top. It makes a fun matching game for my son. He loves that part. See...coupons are educational too...lol. This particular Smart Source I had 8 of!!!!! Then I cut them in stacks.
Then I sort them into like piles. Laundry, free's, juice, snacks, etc. Then I file them away in my never left at home coupon holder. Which I even took the time and pulled all of the expired. That's a task in itself. It's super organized now!
It is stuffed to the brim after adding all of the new coupons!
She's all ready for Super Double coupons at K-Mart now...lol. They are doubling in most areas right now up to $2 coupons ($4!). Check your ad. It's worth the trip.

How Do You Store and Organize Your Recipes?

I have been thinking of finally beautifying my recipe collection...aka stack of index cards. I really want to feel inspired when I go to cook or bake. Seems like a win/win. I try to always print on a 4x6 index card. I just like the feel of a card and I have it formatted on my computer. So, once I find a recipe I just copy, paste and print. I personally like to cook with one recipe in front of me. Plus when you print your own you can add permanent notes.

So, I thought about putting the 4x6" cards into a photo album (2 slots per page). I could flip through them and have them all in one place. If I grow out of it I can have specific binders. Like desserts, dinners, etc. I can also scrapbook the dividers and the cover. That way it's personal and not boring. Plus it will be organized and easy to thumb through! I could even have the top slot be a picture with the recipe below. But, baby steps first...lol.

My other idea I have had since the lunchbox craze way back when. I actually made my mom one for Christmas in vintage inspired Granny's Kitchen by SEI. Her kitchen matched the style. Never did take a picture of it though...darn. Next trip to Washington I'll have to remember. I had made different ones that I sold to customers. A wedding planner, mom planners, and recipe holder. I loved those things. So hard to part with! I even used my oil paints for the flowers.

Feeling Inspired to Craft with my Paper...

I used to be a huge scrapbooker/card maker/paper crafter. Then I recieved a sewing machine for Christmas one year and found fabric! The fabric buying was similar to scrapbook paper buying. The one good thing about paper is the instant gratification. I have been wanting to make little birthday tags to go with presents for my boys friends and all the birthday parties. I always wait till the last minute on that kinda stuff. I like to add all the details. In fact at my sons party this year a friend made a homemade birthday card. I appreciate the time and thought that goes into handmade cards. Then I was thinking I could make something for my mom. Might end up making my recipe holder. More to come!

Big Kid and his cousin that is 2 wks older playing on driftwood at Port Townsend, Washington.

Visiting my dad's friends camping at the base of Mt. Adam's. So, beautiful!

Joe is out playing basesball today. Forecast is calling for 86 and sunny. Can't beat that. The boys are playing with their cars in the other room. I need to go pick up my Sunday Papers and plot my attack for the week on groceries...lol. I have been working on my blog. I can be such a perfectionist. I had a bunch of wording in my header and it was too busy. This one is a tad too dark with the background. I have spent hours in Paint trying to make one! This one will do for now. It's us on the beach in Washington at sunset. I love that picture. We had went home to visit my family. I am a transplant from Washington State. Now living in Ohio. Bit, of culture shock 6 1/2 yrs ago. But, both have great places to go. I must admit I don't miss the cloudy wet days in Washington. But, I do miss seeing Mt. Rainier when I walked outside, the ocean, apple orchards, the waterfront, and my family of course. Just got done reading Family Fun Magazine. Love that magazine for getting ideas for the kids. Hope you have a great Sunday with your family!

Ice Cream Cupcakes Anyone???

My sons birthday falls on April Fool's Day. Go figure ;) Will always be fun. So, I decided to make something extra special and in theme with the day for his birthday party at Chuck E Cheese. Best part no drips ;)

Everyone at his party loved them! Only dilemma I had was how to transport them??? Then I thought about all the containers I had and the cookie tin came to mind. So, I popped them all in little plastic cups and into the tin. It was easy to get them to the party. I stuck toothpicks in the sides and used plastic wrap over the top. They were so tightly fit it worked great!

Ice Cream Cone Cakes

A creative twist on the traditional birthday cake. Kids will love eating their cake in a cone instead of on a plate!

Prep Time: 10 min
Total Time: 1 hour 20 min
Makes: 24 cone cakes

1 box Betty Crocker® SuperMoist® party rainbow chip cake mix
Water, vegetable oil and egg whites called for on cake mix box

24 flat-bottom ice cream cones

1 to 2 containers Betty Crocker® Rich & Creamy frosting (any flavor)

1.
Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pans). Place paper baking cup in each of 24 regular-size muffin cups.
2.
Make cake batter as directed on box. Fill each cup 2/3 full of batter (1 heaping tablespoon each). Place ice cream cone upside down on batter in each cup.
3.
Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until toothpick inserted in cake comes out clean (cones may tilt on batter). Cool completely, about 30 minutes. Remove paper baking cups. Generously frost cake with frosting, and decorate as desired. Store loosely covered.
High Altitude (3500-6500 ft): Follow High Altitude directions on cake mix box. Fill cones about 1/2 full to make 36 to 40 cones. Bake 20 to 25 minutes.

After frosting, enjoy a downpour! Sprinkle frosted cone cakes with any of the following: breakfast cereal, animal crackers, dried fruit, candy sprinkles, crushed hard candies, graham cracker crumbs, granola, mini chocolate chips or chopped nuts.

My tips: They will all be crooked!!!! LOL Once cooled I took a knife and shaped them into ice cream scoop shape (easy). Frosted and added sprinkles. Cute idea I thought of was to take a lifesaver and put a candle in it for the birthday child!

Wristlet Style Key Fobs (Keychains) Just in Time For Warm Weather

So, I have become slightly obsessed with making these Key Fobs. I love them! I have about 60 made right now! I just counted. That's pretty crazy. I think the problem is I find fabrics at a local fabric shop and pick them specifically for the key fobs. I have a little problem with buying fabric. They're all so yummy. You can find more details about my Wristlet Key Fobs here. Like the dimensions etc. I was selling them on a favorite website of mine and one lady commented that they are perfect for all of the upcoming Spring and Summer activities. Like going to amusement parks, water parks, and anywhere where you needs your hands free for other things. I love these since I have a little one in my arms constantly. I find myself forgetting it's even on my wrist...lol. So, here is my Spring and Summer Collection. Sure to be a favorite in there for many of you. So, little man was born the day before Valentine's Day. I was induced and he almost made his original due date after 36 hrs of waiting. Glad I went a day early. He was born 9lbs 10oz!!! We were in shock. Explains my huge belly ;)

I finished his nursery!!!!!!!! Honestly...I didn't think I would get it done. I self drafted all of my patterns for his bedding and I taught myself how to upholster the glider/ottoman. Which turned out soft and chocolaty. Nothing like the denim it once was...lol. I also made a matching pillow, 4 pictures, and curtains. Every time I tuck him in I want to get in. The comforter is so soft and warm. Pictures, pictures...

We took a trip to Washington to see my family and introduce little man to my family. The boys are getting along great. The little man is already about to start walking!

I have been doing huge custom orders for friends and family. Diaper bags, nursing covers, key fobs, bibs, booties, coordinating blankets for my friends twins soon to arrive. Anyway..I'm still around and kicking ;) Slightly exhausted and missing my sewing time. But, we've been blessed with our family of four and it takes time to make that happen! Making Room For Baby

He's fast approaching. Only 5 1/2 weeks left until he makes his arrival on Valentine's Day. I still have plans to design and sew his crib bedding and now I will be reupholstering a glider I bought. Wish me luck ;) It will be my first try at upholstery. But, it doesn't seem like it will be too hard.

The crib bedding should be adorable. I'm planning to mix chocolate browns, baby blue and lime green. I'll post a picture when/if it gets done...lol. Crazy how fast 9 months (actually 10) can pass by.

I have had a lot of custom orders lately. So, I had to get those done first. I made my first article of clothing for my son. I drafted a pattern for lounge jammy pants. Made him three pairs for Christmas. He loves them! Planning to make a couple matching pairs for his brother. Start the bonding early ;) Nice to finally have tackled clothes. Much better than expected. Funny part is I bought a pattern for them and then tossed it. My brain works better at it's own design. Plus fit is always important. That pattern looked like it would be too big.

Wow...it's been awhile!

So, a lot has happened since the last post. Which I can't believe was that long ago. It's official we are having another boy! So, exciting. Wish we could just pick a name...lol. Not sure why it's so difficult to pick a name this time around. He's an active little guy. I'm already in the 3rd trimester of my pregnancy. It's flying by. I really need to start prepping the nursery and designing his crib bedding and my diaper bag!

My first craft show was a success! I shared a booth with a friend. Turned out perfect. The traffic came in waves. But, I sold quite a bit. It was a little stressful getting ready for the show. But, completely worth. Can't wait for the next one. Here are some pictures of my half of the booth. I was worried I wouldn't have enough to fill it up. I was wrong. these pictures are after a lot of stock had been sold too!

The compliments were amazing. People couldn't get over how pretty the bibs were. Worried about them getting dirty. I had to reassure them that they are completely washable. I sold almost all of my bibs at the show. The key fobs were another big seller. I still need to list them in my store.

Isn't that the cutest set???

I was playing around with the booties and made matching bows for the tops and stitched them down tight. Thought that made the cherries on the soles pop.
My friend had the set made for a co-worker who was just approved the adoption of a preemie baby girl!
So, we're getting closer to finding out what we're having!!! On next Tuesday we should know the sex of our little bean. I can't wait. Feels like the month and a week has dragged on and on...lol. We had a slow weekend around here. But, I got lots of cleaning done this morning. Now that's super exciting. I'm about to start working on another bag. Hmmm...what should I design this time???

It feels like Fall here already or at least it did this weekend. Although, it's going back up into the upper 80s this week. I went and bought some pumpkin puree to make a loaf of pumpkin bread. Yummy! I'm not a big fan of pumpkin pie. Texture thing. But, I like the taste of it in sweets. My friend made these pumpkin chocolate chip cookies last year and they were so yummy. That's when I realized I do actually like pumpkin...lol.

I have a feeling a baking spree will be coming soon. Since I found another recipe for soft oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Since I have been pregnant I can't pass the bakery section of the grocery store without buying something. Explains why I'm finally starting to gain some weight. Lately it's been cinnamon rolls with a ton of cream cheese frosting smothered all over them. Probably not the best choice. But, they're so good and I just have to pop them in the microwave to get them gooey ;) After all that talk maybe I need some lunch. Have a great week!

I just finished this bib up last night. Thought it turned out rather cute ;) Reminds me of the fabric on the clothes the Cabbage Patch Kids would have came in. That little puff flower I spent a bunch of time on. But, it looks so cute. I was going to do two little puffs with a stem. But, figured that would be cherry overload.

I did some minor fabric shopping this past weekend. Got to love a Labor Day fabric sale! Got some new fabrics that I am looking forward to creating new items with. I was in a vintage mood. So, that will be seen in some of the new items. Can you believe Christmas is less than 4 months away??? I just realized that what I listed on etsy today. Better get myself off the computer and onto the sewing machine.

Still counting down till I find out the sex of the baby. I'll be 17 weeks tomorrow. I am eager to design a diaper bag specifically for me. It's been so long since I had a little baby to carry stuff around for. But, the bag has to be able to cater to my sons needs too. He's only 3 1/2. But, he needs the usuals. Drink, fruit snacks, and a toy. Just need to find out what I'm having so I can pick the fabric and start drafting the design. I don't like a huge bag to carry around. Can't believe my first diaper bag I picked out was an overnighter! I figured the bigger the better...right...oh so wrong! Only used it for trips. Live you learn. It's all girl related lately! It could be that I am lazy and don't want to change the thread...lol.

This one turned out so cute. I actually made the little puffy flower by hand. Reminds me of those cute pin cushions. I was going to do a little stuffed circle. But, thought that would be too much and went with a flower. I really like that these bibs are OOAK (one of a kind). Kids deserve to be the only ones with at least one thing in their wardrobe ;)

One added bonus of the bib is that it's reversible. So, if you wanted this side for drool and the other for messes. That's always an option. It's listed in my shop for $10

So, I went to the doctor on Monday and we will be finding out the baby's sex on September 25th!! So, excited. The doctor was trying to hear the heartbeat with the doppler and having problems finding it. Scared the crap out of me. So, he pushed in a little further. At 13 weeks that little baby pushed back and the doctor felt it. Pretty impressive considering the baby is only supposed to be about 3 1/2-4"! I'll be sure to keep you all posted. I should start taking bets now...lol. My sister is convinced it's a boy and then I have friends that say girl. I have no clue either way. With my son I just knew he was a boy. We couldn't say she. Always said he. Could have been coincidence though. Who knows.

Introducing our new Bib Design!!

I was in need of something new. So, I sat and drafted a new pattern. I'm pleased with how it turned out! Don't you love the little crocheted flower? It was a PIF (pay it forward from etsy seller chelmorning). This is a one of a kind. I can't even list it in my shop yet. I was emailing a couple friends and relatives and one has already put a hold on it ;)

I was trying for one of a kind. I can't remember seeing a shape quite like this one. Can't wait to make a couple for me! Of course once I find out the sex of the baby. Which should be next month! This pregnancy is flying by.

Starting price will around be $10-12 depending on the detail. I'll be sure to post about the next one I make.

Sorry I haven't posted in so long! I think this excuse will work though ;)

Around the last time I posted I found out I was pregnant! I have been out of commission. Today was the first time I touched my sewing machine since June. Poor thing. I have been extremely sick. But, I'm learning that the more active I am the better I feel. If that makes any sense. We're pretty excited. I'm due on Valentine's Day! As you can see my little bean in the making.

I surprised my guy with this card. Which I'm planning to make more and list them in my shop with the pregnancy test included. The reaction was priceless. I have been on a card making kick. So, when he saw this one. He did one of those oooh...I haven't seen a card like this before (very sarcastic). Then he opened it to see the pregnancy test. "Huh?? Are you really???" Neat reaction.

Anyway...that's where I have been. But, I'm going to try to keep posting!

Retro Goodness Diaper Bag/ Handbag

I have been working on this little ditty for quite some time. Not sure why I lost my mojo in the middle. But, I started up a WIP Challenge on the EtsyKids site and this was my project in mind. WIP means work in progress. In other words the projects you start and for some reason just don't get back to. I'm so glad I got back to this one.
Like the label that is matching in green? I was playing around with making them when I got a new printer. After the cheapo Lexmark; replace every year printer called it quits. Guess I had a little frustration with it. It took me around 2 months to research the best printer. I ended up with a HP and love it.
See the new handle style? I decided that the handles slip around too much and did what I call the shoulder treatment to the strap. I basically folded the top shoulder resting area of the strap and sewed it together. It still gives the bag the proportion and same great look at the seam by the bag. But, now the strap is easier to use and keep on the shoulder. With little kids that's the last thing you want to worry about.

I'm tooting my own horn...lol. Today I was spending time with friends. All of them had new babies. One of them I made this cheetah print gift set as a baby shower present. She just happened to have it there today. Her little lady was drooling all down my arm and I grabbed her burp cloth. It worked perfectly. Just the right size.

It covered my shoulder and the side of my arm where she was drooling! It was great to see all of that research had gone into the perfect burp cloth. It's a mandatory gift for new moms for me now!

This week it's the toy box. I actually just upgraded to a craft basket on wheels...lol. I used to put fabric in it. But, I obviously outgrew it. Now my fabric is all organized by color on a shelving unit. The other was one of those fabric cubes. I do not recommend them for toys! It was pretty much shredded from the in and out of toys. My little guy always complained when it was clean up time because the sides would collapse. So, this worked out for the both of us ;) May not be very stylish in the family room. But, it serves it's purpose! My goal is to build an ottoman with storage and upholster it in beautiful fabric for his toys. It's on my list of things to do!

Anyway...I'm going to sort through all the McDonald's toys and various other toys that always end up in that basket. Tossing the broken, misfit toys and trash that my son feels resembles toys and puts in there...lol.

All the toys dumped out. I was surprised he actually wanted to get rid of toys with me!

Oooh...did you see the vintage toy??? I found that at a garage sale and cleaned and lysoled it to looking new. It's a fisher price cash register toy with the pretend money. Little guy loves it! I used to play with the same one when I was little. I was watching my friends son and that was the first toy he went to. Maybe I need to start buying the dated toys that don't involve AA batteries!

Aren't they yummy???

I was sitting there last night and had an urge to play with paper. So, Joe was watching a movie and I was at the dining room table making these cards. I was pumping them out. I would finish one and think ooohhh....I gotta make one like this and this and use this paper...lol. Joe kept saying are you finished yet. I think it was after 1am at that point! You know how you get on one of those crafty surges of energy. It's a shame to fall asleep and not get one more in ;)

These are the Oh Baby cards.

I thought it would be nice to have these in my shop. Since most of my items are geared toward baby shower & new mom gifts. Then a customer can pick out a card to send with the item. I could even add a special message inside the card from the gift giver. Then they have nothing else to worry about.

Some baby cards are so boring and in the traditional "baby" colors. But, I think these are unique and perfect for the occasion. I'll be listing them soon.

Couple questions from a buyers point of view...

How much do you think I should charge for one?

One more Trio...Tropical Get Away Burp Cloth Trio Gift Set

I was actually productive before 10 am!!! ;)

I just finished this set. I think it turned out really cute. There is one solid hot pink, one hibiscus print, and one that I quilted with both fabrics. I was wanting to make one extra special.
I also have a matching diaper and wipe clutch and oversized burp cloth in the same fabric. Apparently I like the fabric ;)
A picture of them folded in half. I really like this size. Plus they are so soft that if you are out and worried about your clothes. You can throw one of these over your shoulder for baby to rest on it snugly.
These remind me of little swiss rolls. The cakes. Maybe I should give them a better product line name.

We had a family night for the holiday weekend. Went to watch the Florence Freedoms play ball in Northern Kentucky. Joe knew a guy in the line up. The night was perfect for a baseball game. 85 degrees, a little breeze, and no mosquitoes! Have a great weekend!

I am on the internet pretty much all day long. The computer & internet are on all day long. I'm not on it all day long, but I will hop on whenever I have a minute or two or three...lol.
I am from Tacoma, Washington. Grew up there my entire life. Moved to Ohio to be with my college guy back in 2002. Almost my entire family lives there still.
I am an assistant organizer of a playgroup. Which I am very active in. I try to keep my son busy and myself too ;) Gotta love moms night out every month too.
When I was a Senior in college I went to Jamaica for spring break by myself!!! My friend canceled last minute for our trip to Florida. So, I picked up a phone and got a travel agent to make my spring break happen within 24hrs. She was so nervous and kept saying this is all inclusive you do not need to leave the property! LOL. It was the best experience of my life. Besides having my son.
I have a fabric, ribbon and scrapbook obsession. Can't have enough of any of it!
I once fell asleep during a root canal. Give me laughing gas and I'm out.

Time has flown since my last post! I just designed this bag for my friend. Her face when it was done was priceless...lol. She must have said at least 3 or 4 times during lunch how much she loved her new bag. She even switched everything over from her old diaper bag during lunch.

She picked this fabric out of tons of my samples. I had this bag pictured when I bought the fabric way back when. She was the perfect customer for it! She loves that she won't see anyone else carrying around the same bag.

Gotta love the orange lining! A little risky yes...but the bag wouldn't be complete without it!

A little added surprise with packaging!

Here are a couple examples of packages I just sent out or completed. I have been playing around with packaging ideas.

I think it's fun to open a package up that you bought yourself ;) and it feels like a present. A little surprise for the buyer I guess. There are actually little clips of curling ribbon in the box if you look closely. Not enough to make a mess. But, enough for that little added surprise. I just started packaging ideas. So, these customers got the first attempt! Which I think turned out cute.

This is one that was being hand delivered to a friend. It has a rolled up bib and coordinating booties inide. The tissue paper actually matches the material. I'll show those in the next post.

I actually used a rubber band with all the ribbon tied to it, then wrapped it around this one so that she could peak before giving it away as a gift. Then she can put it back on after and no one will ever know.

I guess packaging will depend on time. If I have a rush of orders it's more important to get them protected and in the mail. But, I love to add that little extra when I can!

Finally! Something to catch the run off ;)

After talking with a friend she said she always saw bibs with a little pocket. Why not a burp cloth with a pocket? So, I went to work designing her this one for after her son was born a week & 1/2 ago. It was my gift to her with the matching bib! By the way he's a doll! She has the matching diaper bag, nursing cover, bib, and now burp cloth! We'll call her a Get Carried Away frequent shopper ;)

I made it reversible since sometimes we want it to match ;) The pocket will reverse as well when flipped as seen in the picture above.

No more spit up run off! This burp cloth will catch it before it hits the floor, furniture or your clothes!

Update: I guess this idea is already out there. I honestly designed this one up in my head without seeing one...lol. Missed the boat on the this one I guess ;) So, for the sake of originality I won't be selling these burp cloths :( I have to be unique! I have the wheels cranking in my head so who knows what I will design with spit up in mind (sounded kinda funny).

I love baby blue with black. It's so hard to find baby clothes that have even a smidge of black on them. This was a custom order for a friend. She was giving it as a baby shower gift to a mom that just had a little boy.

I just finished up this custom order set last week for a friend. I also made a matching diaper bag but forgot to take a picture (doh). But, the set looked amazing together. I just finished this custom order for a baby shower gift.

It turned out adorable! It is the diaper bag, coin purse, and oversized burp cloth that can double as a changing pad or small mat for baby to lay on.
She liked the set so well she has put in another order for a similar set with a Zebra print. I'll be sure to post pictures when I am done. I just found the perfect zebra fabric today.

Just finished this bag! It was a custom order for an amazing customer in Oregon. We talked back and forth about how to make her the perfect bag. She loves it! I like that it's simple but still unique. It will definitely stay unique because I only have a tiny bit of the fabric left. Will have to call this bag one of a kind...lol.
She was tired of carrying around two bags all the time. One purse for her and a diaper bag for the little one. So, she thought this was perfect and is making the switch to one bag. That's why we worked so closely together. Making sure the colors would match her usual wardrobe colors. But, she still wanted to come a little out of her shell and try something a little different. This is what we came up with.
The inside has the same Hampton Stripe but in the opposite direction. With the standard pockets and bottle/water bottle loop.
Perfect Match and ready for some warmer weather!

This was the other baby gift set I made this past weekend. isn't it adorable. The bottom of the booties is in the coordinating cheetah print. If that isn't girly...I don't know what is ;)

I have barely stepped away from the sewing machine this week. Between the snow and all of my new bag orders. I feel like I'm hibernating...lol. I have two more orders to complete. This bag above I have made two of this week. Just received a custom order from a lady in Oregon. So close to home. She's been great to work with. After lots of ideas being tossed around. She chose the Hampton stripe (soft blues, browns, greens, creams) with the khaki canvas. Lined in either brown or khaki. I'll be sure to post a picture when I get a chance. I had the bag in mind since September. So, I'm looking forward to seeing it finished. Love designing bags with customers. Gets my creativity going!

I have been restocking all of my supplies. Business Cards, Thank You Cards, and Gift Tags. Always a good sign when you have to make a ton more because you ran out.

I was invited to my friends baby shower this weekend....

I thought...I've got to come up with something new and different. My friends know what I make...lol. She scored by getting two custom designed sets with her in mind all the way through ;) She received the purple paisley and the pink cheetah sets.
The burp cloth was designed with moms in mind. I did some research and asked what moms want in a burp cloth. Majority said that burp cloths were never big enough. They wanted them to be large enough to cover their entire shoulder and neck. It can be folded in half if someone needs less coverage. The sets can be made to match a diaper bag. Would be so cute all together. The set will be retailing for $27. It's not currently available in my store yet. But, if you leave a comment below I will try to get back to you and offer it to my blog readers now.

Busy behind the presser foot...

Busy, Busy...

Last week was a busy one. If my sewing machine & computer had a time clock check in/out...you would do a double check at the hours. I sold 3 bags and one bib. The one below is shown in progress here. I love the symmetry of this bag. I am a tad of a perfectionist and for some reason this bag is just appealing to look at. It's all for my customers and I want them to have something eye catching. Why should we settle for the norm when we can have something custom and unique.
I made this bag below for a good friend. She was giving it as a present for Christmas. Sometimes I like the simplicity of just the ribbon. By the way all of my bags can be made without the bow if I am asked prior to the sale. I am planning on listing another one soon. So, keep your eye out for it.
I'm working a new coin purse design. I randomly designed it in my head while making a bag yesterday. I'll try to post pictures soon as well. It will be more rounded then the envelope style. I need to actually list one of them in my store.

It finally snowed here in Ohio!!! I was beginning to wonder if we were going to have a winter...lol. I took little man out in it today. He loved it. I never bothered to buy gloves this year. With how warm it was. So, I put socks on his hands...lol. Quote me on this one, "Next time it snows (at least 3") I will build a snowman with him!" Okay, I'm going back to creating.

What's in the box?

I just finished up another of the bag below. One of my personal favorites. It was an order from ETSY. Nice lady in Colorado who already loves it from the pictures alone :) I am going to be able to make maybe one or two more before I am out of the fabric. So, get it before it's gone!

The rest of the packages are vintage macrame books from ebay sales going out. Lots of people buying Christmas pattern books? I remember when my mom would macrame plant hangers. I should attempt to learn it with all of the new vintage pattern books around me. I'm liquidating a craft store that's why I have tons of new vintage craft books. She had tons of boxes in the store basement of every craft you can think of dated all the way back to the 50s!!! I'll have to start another post on all of the pattern books. Maybe sell them only to my blog readers at a discount rate.

I am in the creative designer mode. I have my sewing machines presser foot set on a purple bag coming soon. I just found some adorable purple gingham lining fabric for inside. I'll keep you posted on it.

I just recently picked up my knitting needles and made my son a cute scarf. I'll have to picture that soon. Me and the girls got together last week for a knitting night. I brushed up my skills again. I'm hoping to start making some cute baby booties to match the bags. I actually just made my first pair of sewn booties the other day in the blue & brown disco dot material (I know more disco dots "phase remember"). I am perfecting a new pattern. I hope to get them finished soon. How cute would it be to have a whole matching set? Diaper bag, bib, burp cloth, and cute booties. That would make a wonderful baby shower present.

My good friend from college had me create a custom bag for her expecting sister in law for Christmas. I was told it was the talk of the party. She loved it! We designed the Black & Ivory flower bag. I have another one available in my store. I plan to make myself one too if I don't run out of the fabric.

YUMMY!!!

Some people collect stamps and baseball cards. I on the other hand collect ribbon, fabric and scrapbook papers. I love to display my pretty ribbon in canisters. I get a lot of color inspiration just from taking a glance at them all pretty on the shelf. My ribbon obsession first began when I started scrapbooking. Although I was reluctant to use my ribbon stash...lol. I began hoarding it. Well the collection grew and grew. Then I started making my bags and loved how the ribbon added that extra touch. For some reason it was easier to let go of it when being sewn into a bag.

I have thought about doing a custom bag listings in my store. That way the customer could pick and choose the fabric and ribbon to build the perfect bag for themselves. I of course would lend a hand if the colors were not matching in person. I'm a perfectionist when it comes to coordinating colors. But, I would make it mismatched at their request ;)

For the Love of the Bag...

I wanted to give a little more information as to how your bag is created. I must admit I am a perfectionist. I spend many hours making sure everything is perfect. From measuring to cutting to sewing. I get a lot of great creative energy in the evening hours. As you can tell from the glow of the sewing machine. I don't skip a detail with my bags. I double interface them so they aren't floppy and unstable. A good bag in my opinion should hold itself up. As a mom myself I try to think of things I would want or need a bag to offer. I then incorporate it into my bags & accessories.

My favorite part of making the bag is the finished product. I even throw it over my shoulder and give it a test drive. Make sure it looks good on ;) I just finished this bag for a customer on etsy. But, I first created it for a good friends Sister In Law.

Got Bibs???

This is a group of my available reversible bibs. It took me a while to perfect the shape. But, these are my favorite! I have them in all colors & styles, girl, boy, or gender neutral. Majority of the bibs shown can have a matching diaper bag to go with. My newest ones have soft absorbent fleece on the back.
Hot off the machine is this adorable linen and flannel bib above. I am almost finished with the matching diaper bag. Love that fabric. It's girly but not too overpowering. They are currently on sale for $8.99 each!

Classic Black & Cream Flower Diaper Bag or Handbag

I am planning to make myself one of these. I love that it's just classy! Not to flashy but, definitely making a style statement. I saw this fabric and about bought the entire bolt...lol. I have a son and the thought of carrying around a girly diaper bag makes me feel bad. If I had to leave it with him while being cared for by someone else. But, this one to me seems pretty neutral. Dad may not agree to carry it...but does he ever anyway??? Most of my wardrobe has a little black. So, it would look great with my style. Plus it matches my winter coat. Can't beat that.

The bag and coin purses were a custom order for a sweet lady on Esty. I thought it turned out great. She bought her bag to use it as a Handbag. I try to meet every expectation of customers. So, if they want a coordinating Ipod case to go with. I can do it ;)
This was my first attempt at making a coin purse way back when. I thought it turned out perfect. I actually shocked myself...lol. I make them in different sizes too. This one was big enough to put a phone, stack of business cards, and money. Perfect size for those items in your bag you need instantly.
Just this fall I started making bibs. With some trial and error on the shape I liked. I created this one. It's a reversible bib. The other side is soft absorbing fleece. I have the plans in to start making baby booties. Just need to find the time.

Welcome. My name is Amber. I am a designer living in the Midwest, but uprooted from Washington State. Yes, I know why do they always add state to the end??? If we don't the first response is DC? I moved out here to be with my college guy ;) Then we got settled, bought a house, and had our son Caden. He's now 2 1/2 and has a personality of his own.

After becoming a new mom I realized that there are so many things to carry, remember and do! What do we carry it all in you ask??? The free Similac bag from the hospital or how about Winnie the Pooh. Oh momma, are we styling now...lol. I bought the Eddie Baurer Diaper Bag. The biggest one I could find. I was thinking well the more room the better. I'm rolling my eye's, can you feel it? What was I thinking? Of course, that became the travel bag and I resulted to using....the free Similac Bag. Nothing says style like that little black bag. So, out of frustration and a little curious temptation. I created my first Trendy Get Carried Away Diaper Bag. I thought I wonder if anyone else would like this bag too. What the heck. I'll list it on Ebay and see what happens. It sold and had awesome feedback! They liked it, they really liked it ;) Then friends, family, internet message board friends, and now customers all wanted one. So, I got sewing. I love making them. You want the honest truth?? I have made tons of bags and guess what? I haven't been able to keep one for myself. They fly off the machine and onto some lucky ladies shoulder. Pretty sad in a good way that I haven't been able to keep one for myself ;). I'll post when that day comes...lol.

The best part about my bags is they look great and they are functional. Plus they transition into your handbag after baby becomes a toddler and doesn't need diapers anymore. I have sold probably 50% to moms and the other 50% to ladies without babies that use it as a handbag. They even wanted the bottle loop for their water bottle. So, that shows a lot about them not looking like a diaper bag ;)

I am now venturing out a little with coordinating accessories. Like baby bibs, burp cloths, baby blankets, coin purses, ipod holders, and just recently organizers. So, take a look at my bags and Get Carried Away!
